Children’s Nursing

“The staff are incredibly supportive and are heavily invested in every student”

I applied for the course at Oxford Brookes due to its good reputation, the reputation of the nearby children’s hospital at the John Radcliffe, and because Brookes offers the Children’s Nursing course at master’s level.

I really enjoy the practical side of the course, particularly the skills sessions where we practice on simulated child and baby manikins, learning how to attend to children with different needs on the ward. Some of the sessions are run by experts in the field and their anecdotes make it interesting and easier to remember things.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my placements during the course. All of the nurses, whether they are your assigned mentor or not, are constantly willing to teach and share experiences. You are encouraged to ask questions, have new experiences, and learn in a supported environment.

When I graduate I hope to get a job at the John Radcliffe hospital. Further down the line I would like to progress and potentially attend university again to become an advanced nurse practitioner. We have days organised where various hospitals will be visiting the university to give us an idea about job prospects. The university has also arranged for interview preparation sessions as well as mock interviews with members of the interview panel from the John Radcliffe.
