International Foundation Diploma, 2026, Philippines, Student
“After my foundation course, I’m excited to progress onto the BSc Computer Science for Cyber Security degree here at Oxford Brookes. The foundation year has perfectly bridged the gap between my previous background and the expectations of this upcoming undergraduate programme.”
“Oxford Brookes offers pathways into highly specialised fields.”
As an international student passionate about technology, I was drawn to the University's accredited BSc in Computer Science for Cyber Security. Knowing that the University aligns its curriculum with UK Government standards gave me the confidence that I would be receiving a world-class education that employers deeply respect. Additionally, the University's strong reputation for supporting international students made the decision to move from the Philippines to the UK much less daunting, assuring me that I would be studying in a community that truly values diverse perspectives.
“The University has provided a nurturing environment that allows me to thrive both academically and personally.”
I’ve been supported in my transition into both a new country and a different academic culture. Before I arrived, the International Student Advice Team (ISAT) was incredibly helpful in guiding me through the visa process and answering my logistical questions. Since arriving, the ongoing guidance from my tutors, including Associate Professor Lisa Hale, has been invaluable. They understand the challenges of adapting to the UK higher education system while balancing other responsibilities; like my part-time role as a carer and administrator for a care group.
“The International Foundation Diploma has been instrumental in building my academic confidence.”
It’s taught me how to learn independently within the UK educational framework while solidifying my core programming skills, particularly in Python. I’ve developed strong research techniques, which I recently applied to an essay exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence on cybersecurity.
“I have built positive and collaborative relationships with my tutors and classmates.”
The environment at Oxford Brookes is very interactive, which makes it easy to engage in discussions and work on projects with peers from all over the world. My tutors are approachable and genuinely invested in our success, which I deeply appreciate. My favourite aspect of the course so far has been the opportunity to dive into practical problem-solving. Being able to connect core computer science concepts with modern, real-world issues makes every module feel highly relevant and exciting for my future career.
“Oxford is an incredibly inspiring city to live and study in.”
Being surrounded by such rich academic history constantly motivates me to push my boundaries. When I am not studying or attending classes, I work part-time as a carer or administrator, which has been a deeply rewarding way to connect with the local community here in Oxfordshire. In my spare time, I go to the gym to maintain my physical and mental health. I also enjoy expanding my technical skills by working on personal coding projects, as well as reading about personal finance and the stock market. I also love travelling and exploring new cultures. I am currently helping plan a trip to Thailand with friends to celebrate the end of our academic year, which helps me maintain a great work-life balance and build a network that may be useful in the future.
“I aim to progress to an MSc in Artificial Intelligence at Oxford Brookes.”
My ultimate goal is to build a successful career in the UK tech industry, securing a role as a cybersecurity specialist or network defender, leveraging the critical skills and NCSC-accredited education I will receive at Oxford Brookes. Because the UK has a high demand for cyber professionals, I am optimistic about building my career here. Establishing a stable and rewarding career in the UK will allow me to achieve my professional ambitions while providing meaningful, long-lasting support for my family back home in the Philippines.
