Zita Zelei had worked in a variety of different roles as teaching assistant, nanny and receptionist. She’d previously started a Masters degree but had to withdraw due to changing circumstances. She came to Brookes in search of an intellectual challenge and determined to finally complete her MA English Literature.
The opportunity to study at Brookes was too good to miss. I wanted the intellectual challenge, and I was looking forward to stimulating classes, lectures, and like-minded course mates. I was attracted to Brookes because of its reputation for being an inclusive university.
I found the institution very impressive. The course offers flexibility regarding the choice of taught modules and the modules themselves are well thought out. Another major attraction for me was the fact that you can attend the classes in the evening so you can spend the rest of your day working part-time or studying.
The course and the lecturers have made me improve and stretch my own boundaries, both professionally and personally. The lecturers' professional but approachable attitude has continued to impress me from day one. All the help you need is given, you just need to ask. My course mates are all fantastic people, and strong friendships have been formed.
Oxford Brookes is a highly respected university that’s valued all over the world. Apart from making you extremely knowledgeable in your chosen field, a MA degree provides you with essential transferable skills in research, problem-solving skills and a greater perspective on things.
In Oxford you’re spoilt for choice for evenings out as there is always a concert or some poetry reading going on. The city is comfortable and accessible for students as you can cycle everywhere and the bus services are also excellent. The city is full of second-hand bookshops and charity shops where you can pick up literary treasures for peanuts. The Brookes library and access to the Bodleian have provided me with all the resources I need for my studies. Studying in this city is a dream come true.
While studying at Brookes I volunteered at the Oxford Literary Festival. It was one of the most exciting events of my year. I would definitely recommend grabbing any opportunities you can to volunteer as it’s highly rewarding, and a great way to make friends.
The course has immensely improved my research and problem-solving skills, as well as boosted my confidence. Thanks to the lecturers in this course, and the tasks they set for us, I feel I could now attempt to tackle any challenges or problems. In the future I’d like to carry on cultivating my interest in English Literature and possibly teach it too.
As a student from Hungary, I’d say to any other students coming from abroad: don't hesitate, even if things seem hard or even impossible at first. Follow your dreams! If you encounter any difficulties then seek advice as Brookes' student services, the Students' Union, the Accommodation Bureau, and Student Central will be there to advise you, support and help you through any tough times.
