Free language modules

Meeting the challenge of globalisation by improving language skills. We provide a wide range of foreign language classes for University students.

Learning a language is:

  • Challenging but rewarding
  • Good for employability or personal development
  • An opportunity to engage in another culture

We provide a number of language modules in:

  • French (Beginners 1 to Advanced 2)
  • Spanish (Beginners 1 to Advanced 2)
  • German (Upper Intermediate 1 and 2)
  • Mandarin (Beginners 1 to Upper Intermediate 2)

Which language level am I?

We use the Common European Framework system to assess language competency in all language modules that we offer. If you are not sure which language level to choose, we advise you to take the online placement test available. Upon completion, the form will indicate which level would be best for you.

Individual module outlines, assessment and textbook information are available on the below links:

Am I entitled to a fee waiver?

The free language module is only available to students enrolled on a foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate or research programme of study at Oxford Brookes University (excluding partner colleges). Full-time undergraduate or postgraduate students can take one free language module per calendar year. Part-time undergraduate or postgraduate students can take one free language module every two calendar years. Please note, Academic English modules offered by the Centre for Academic Development also count as free language modules.

For instance, if your academic year starts in September, then you can take one free language module either commencing in September or starting in January. If you wish to study a language in both semesters, then you will have to pay for the second one. Similarly, if your academic year starts in January, you can take one free language module either starting in January or September. Adding a language module to both semesters will incur a fee. For further information on fees, please contact Student Finance.

All our modules are taught mainly face-to-face, on Headington Campus - therefore you cannot enrol if you are a distance learner.

Enrolment is subject to availability of places on the language modules and individual programme requirements. Please note many classes are very popular and class numbers are limited so places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

How do I enrol?

Before you enrol, please check that the language module you wish to take does not clash with any lectures or seminars on your taught timetable.

How do I change language levels or delete the module?
