The Mentoring Scheme

Launch - March 2022

The Mentoring Scheme is managed jointly by OBREMS (our alumni association) and the School of the Built Environment and is open to second year students on the BSc Real Estate and the BSc Planning and Property Development courses as well as students on the MSc Real Estate course. Take a look at the Mentoring Scheme on our Hot Property blog for more reports and profiles of mentors and students.

For Students

The mentoring period for undergraduate students starts at the end of March each year with a launch event in central London. The launch event is normally hosted by one of the big firms such as CBRE, Savills or Cushman & Wakefield and is a fantastic networking opportunity where you (hopefully) get to meet your mentor face-to-face for the first time. There are a wide range of mentors who volunteer to take part, from recent graduates to CEOs - and a lot of our younger mentors took part in the mentoring scheme themselves when they were students. All our mentors are alumni of Oxford Brookes (Real Estate or Planning and Property Development) and give their time to the mentoring scheme free of charge.

We invite all second year (BSc) and MSc students to apply for the mentoring scheme - watch out for the presentation and email towards the end of January each year (or September for the MSc students). For further information contact Rachel Dixon rdixon@brookes.ac.uk.

"From hearing the experiences of past mentees I knew that this was an opportunity to learn more about the industry beyond the lecture theatre. It’s a chance to tap into decades worth of expertise and increase your own personal network within the industry and alumni community. There are many mentors to choose from, each expert in different sectors within the industry".

Andrew Whitehead, Avison Young (BSc Real Estate 2022)

For Mentors

We have around 130 alumni who have volunteered to be part of the mentoring scheme and we keep in regular contact to maintain a list of around 90 ‘active’ Mentors that we can match up with students each year.

It’s not just the students who benefit from and enjoy taking part in the mentoring scheme...

"A great engaging programme enabling students to network outside of the classroom and get the best advice of what happens next from those that have been in their shoes!"

Andrew Hynard, Andrew Hynard Consulting (BSc Real Estate Management 1981)

"Having benefited positively from the Mentoring Scheme myself as a student, it has made me realise how important continuing that contact is, and the benefit of maintaining the alumni community as it is great for networking, meeting new people and being able to help students out".

Harriet Costello, CBRE (BSc Real Estate Management 2014)

"I decided to become a Mentor to give a bit back and also stay in touch with a different generation - seeing what is pertinent and important to them. Gives me a different perspective".

James Vivian, Savills (MSc Real Estate 2007)
