Beyond the Crisis: Media, Film and Migration

This public, online lecture by Dr Dalila Missero (Lancaster University) offers an introduction to media and migration, using cinema as a prism to look at the complex politics of representation surrounding contemporary discourses about migrants in the European Union.

In the first part, we will briefly focus on the role of media in the context of globalisation and identify the specificity of cinema as a transnational form of entertainment able to speak to different types of audiences.

In the second part, we will analyse recent examples of European films that achieved visibility in the public debate, sometimes exploiting and other times counteracting the sensationalist tropes of crisis and othering that prevail in mainstream media.

This lecture is part of the Migration and Refugee network's Dialogue in Migration and Refugee Studies, 2022-23.
