Creative Industries Festival: women in the Italian film industry

An evening with Lilia Hartmann Trapani, casting director with extensive experience in the area of casting in film, television, and advertisement.

Lilia Hartmann Trapani
In the last few decades, a growing body of feminist scholarship has countered the tendency to marginalise women from historical accounts by uncovering their contributions to film industries across the globe, while providing alternative historiographical methodologies. Building on existing feminist film history, the AHRC-funded project ‘Women in Italian film production: industrial histories and gendered labour’ aims to investigate the place of women in Italian cinema by looking at a diverse range of professional roles. The project combines archival sources with oral histories exploring the experiences of female workers.

Lilia Hartmann Trapani, casting director, is one of the project participants. For this event, the project team will discuss with Lilia the details of this profession. She has extensive experience in the area of casting in film, television, and advertisement, both in Italy and internationally, having worked on a significant number of projects, including Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, and hit TV shows like Killing Eve, Medici: Masters of Florence, and Succession. Lilia is author of the book The Casting Director’s Craft (Il mestiere di Casting Director [Lupetti, 2020]).

This conversation will explore all aspects of this fascinating - yet under-researched - profession, while revealing its secrets, and tracing its evolution over time. Participants: Lilia Hartmann Trapani (Casting Director), Silvia Dibeltulo (OBU), Daniela Treveri Gennari (OBU), Stephen Gundle (Univerisity of Warwick).
