Border Criminology: The Criminalisation of Global Movement

A look into the growing entanglement of border control, policing, and criminal justice in the governance of migration.

Border criminology examines the growing entanglement of border control, policing, and criminal justice in the governance of migration. This session provides participants with an overview of how contemporary global events are reshaping the treatment of migrants and people seeking asylum worldwide. Focusing on the policing of migration, the session explores how practices of surveillance, detention, deportation, and punishment have become central tools of migration management.

This online lecture will be given by Dr Alice Gerlach, Lecturer in Criminology and Deputy Head for Education and Student Experience for the School of Law and Social Sciences, Oxford Brookes University.

The session forms part of the Dialogue in Migration and Refugee Studies Lecture and Seminar Series, run by the Migration and Refugees Research Centre at Oxford Brookes University. The series runs every week during February and March 2026, with online lectures from experts in different disciplines.
