The Environmental Cost of our Clothes: Rescuing the Planet by Renting our Clothes
This online lecture examines the devastating environmental toll of our 'take-make-waste' fast fashion habit.
Dr Rebecca Beech is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Oxford Brookes Business School, Oxford Brookes University. Her research is in sustainable fashion, pro-environmental consumer behaviour, circular economy, knowledge sharing, consumer empowerment, online communities, and the use of AI in marketing.
This lecture examines the devastating environmental toll of our 'take-make-waste' fast fashion habit, tracing the product life cycle from manufacturing to the unsustainable/ethical failures of global textile disposal. In this open lecture, Dr Beech shares her UN PRME-funded research into the barriers of clothing rental, and will explore how shifting toward a circular economy and embracing repair and rental can empower the audience to build a sustainable wardrobe.
"Whenever I travel, I skip the tourist traps and head straight for the local vintage/second hand shops. My favorite find? A jumper I bought four years ago in a second hand shop in Prague. The owner actually sat me down for a cup of tea while I browsed. I walked out with a great jumper and a memory that’s lasted much longer than any cheap souvenir." - Dr Rebecca Beech
