Professor Melanie Leng MBE receives Honorary Doctorate from Oxford Brookes University

Professor Melanie Leng MBE has been presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Oxford Brookes during this month’s graduation ceremonies.

Professor Leng is a former student of Geology at Oxford Polytechnic, now Oxford Brookes University, where she says she fondly remembers the support she received from her old department.

After completing her studies in Oxford in 1986, Professor Leng moved onto Aberystwyth University in west Wales for a PhD studying hydrocarbon basin dynamics and mineral resources of slates in central Wales.

Following this, Prof Leng started work at the British Geological Survey, eventually working her way up to heading geochemistry and currently is one of three Chief Scientists, with her speciality being Environmental Change. She is also a Professor at the University of Nottingham.

Professor Leng was appointed as a Member of the British Empire in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours, for her services to environmental science.

Professor Leng enjoys using Twitter under her username ‘@MelJLeng’ to share her science, and frequently writes for science blog GeoBlogy.
