Oxford Brookes wins global award for pioneering clean energy education partnership in Egypt
Oxford Brookes University has won a global award for its partnership with Helwan University in Egypt, which is transforming hybrid vehicle technology education and driving clean energy innovation.
The collaboration was one of just five projects worldwide recognised at the Going Global Partnerships Awards 2025, presented on 28 October in London as part of the Going Global conference. The awards celebrate impactful and inspirational initiatives supported through the British Council' Going Global Partnerships programme.
The Oxford Brookes University–Helwan University partnership was praised for its pioneering approach to green transport education, which is helping to advance Egypt’s zero emissions goals.
The project has enhanced Helwan University’s hybrid and electric vehicle technology curriculum, with more than 150 students graduating from the new programme so far. It also established the Helwan-Tech-Racing Formula Student team — a female co-led group whose concept electric car has competed internationally, including at Silverstone 2025, and was showcased at COP27.
The partnership also engages both university and high school learners in climate education and sustainability initiatives, embedding clean energy concepts that encourage students to shape the future of transportation and renewable technology.
Professor Gordana Collier, Head of the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at Oxford Brookes, said: “We are incredibly proud to see this partnership recognised on a global stage. Working with colleagues at Helwan University, we’ve created opportunities for students to learn, innovate and contribute to Egypt’s transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
Since 2021, the Going Global Partnerships programme has supported over 900 collaborations between UK and international institutions across more than 60 countries, strengthening education systems and advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
