Take part in Research: Keeping the Faith - How inclusive is the UK Music Industry?

Oxford Brookes is launching a landmark study to uncover how religious identity shapes professional life in the music industry—and they want to hear your story.

While the UK music scene is celebrated for its diversity, the specific intersection of faith and professional practice remains largely unexplored.

A new research study, Keeping Faith in the UK Music Industries, is exploring how musicians in the United Kingdom experience their religious identity in professional contexts, including whether they encounter accommodation or unfair treatment in their working lives.

"By gathering insight from musicians across the UK, across different sectors of the music industries, and across the full spectrum of religious traditions, the research aims to develop one of the first comprehensive examinations of religious inclusion in the UK music industries.", explains Graham Jackson, PhD Student, School of Arts.

Who can participate?

The study is looking for insights from across the full spectrum of religious traditions and musical genres. You are eligible if:

  • You are 18 or over.
  • You have worked as a semi-professional or professional musician in the UK at any time since 2010.
  • You self-identify with a religious affiliation.

How to get involved

The first stage of the study is an online survey that takes no longer than 20 minutes to complete. Participation is entirely voluntary. All information provided will be treated confidentially, stored securely, and anonymised before analysis and reporting.

Findings from the study will be used to inform future policies, training, and support systems for musicians of faith throughout the UK music industries.
