The RIBA Foundation in Architecture at Oxford Brookes gives students from across the world their first real opportunity to enter the profession — to create a portfolio, gain practice experience, and build the confidence to progress. It is a programme designed to give everyone a fair chance, whatever their background.
Delivered online each year from December to July, the course includes a 200-hour paid placement in practice. This early experience has proven to make a powerful difference, giving students deeper commitment to their studies and the belief that they truly belong in the profession.
“When I started the RIBA Foundation course, I was working in a bar. The long hours and conflicting priorities meant that I almost withdrew. As a young Black woman, I felt that I was stuck – I couldn't see a future for myself in architecture. But the Foundation staff and my tutor convinced me that I had talent, and that was when everything changed. When I finished the course I got a full-time job in practice, and also found a creative community making films and music. Now, I hold an RIBA Part 1 bursary and I'm on track to complete my Part 1. I didn't just find a career; I found my potential.”
