Opening doors, building futures

The RIBA Foundation in Architecture at Oxford Brookes gives students from across the world their first real opportunity to enter the profession — to create a portfolio, gain practice experience, and build the confidence to progress. It is a programme designed to give everyone a fair chance, whatever their background.

Delivered online each year from December to July, the course includes a 200-hour paid placement in practice. This early experience has proven to make a powerful difference, giving students deeper commitment to their studies and the belief that they truly belong in the profession.

“When I started the RIBA Foundation course, I was working in a bar. The long hours and conflicting priorities meant that I almost withdrew. As a young Black woman, I felt that I was stuck – I couldn't see a future for myself in architecture. But the Foundation staff and my tutor convinced me that I had talent, and that was when everything changed. When I finished the course I got a full-time job in practice, and also found a creative community making films and music. Now, I hold an RIBA Part 1 bursary and I'm on track to complete my Part 1. I didn't just find a career; I found my potential.”

Why your support matters

Architecture is still far from reflecting the society it serves. Finance and a lack of welcome remain major barriers for many talented people. The RIBA Foundation helps to overcome these barriers and open the profession to a wider range of voices.

Graduates have gone on to win RIBA prizes, secure bursaries, and step into practice roles — journeys that began with this first opportunity.

How you can help

The priority need is funding.

For many students, just £2,500 — covering course fees, tutor support, and essential equipment — makes the difference between being able to start or being excluded from the profession.

If your practice would also like to be directly involved, you can:

  • Offer a 200-hour paid placement (at least Real Living Wage)
  • Provide mentoring or networks
  • Invite students to your events or talks

Please contact Dr Maria Faraone, to discuss this option further.

Employing or supporting Foundation students has already proven rewarding for practices, bringing fresh energy and perspectives. Participating practices are formally recognised by RIBA and invited to the RIBA Graduation Ceremony, alongside the RIBA Director of Education and the Head of the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes.
