Building resilience and finding inspiration: Adi Jackson's journey in Historic Conservation

Adi Jackson, the 2023-24 Sam Zuckerberg Scholar, embarked on an MSc in Historic Conservation driven by a profound love for architecture.
"I love buildings. I'm into buildings. I understand buildings and I want to understand buildings," she explains. This passion led her to Oxford Brookes, where she found a programme that perfectly aligned with her academic aspirations, offering a unique blend of theoretical and technical learning.
Adi is the 11th recipient of the Sam Zuckerberg Scholarship, which was established in 2011 by the Oxford Jewish Congregation and enables a postgraduate student from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev to study for a Master’s degree at Oxford Brookes.
Finding inspiration in Oxford
"Being in Oxford has encouraged me to study in a much more enthusiastic way," she shares. The city itself became an integral part of her learning experience. "For all my assignments, I picked and wrote about buildings near my house, places that I see every day. Oxford literally teaches you to enjoy the conservation of buildings, to enjoy the old buildings. And I feel like I'm studying simply by walking around the city."
Adi found beauty in the everyday, describing her favourite moments in Oxford as "sitting in the old coffee shop on Queen's Lane in the window and looking down High Street and seeing the beautiful view of the buildings, seeing the tower in the background." The Radcliffe Camera and the Sheldonian Theatre, with their distinctive architectural styles, particularly captivated her.
A journey of growth
Adi's time at Oxford Brookes University has not only deepened her understanding of historic conservation but also enriched her life with invaluable experiences and lasting connections. “It was an important year; it was a great experience and I'm very happy that I had the chance to take part in it. Thank you, everyone, for being part of the journey I have taken this year. To the University, which really has pushed me and wanted for my success, and to the Jewish community and all our friends here. I would not have managed to finish this without the support of everyone. Thank you for the financial help and for the emotional help.”
