Alumna Rosemary Osmond gives back to the next generation of linguists

Rosemary Osmond

For many students, their year abroad is a defining chapter. French and Publishing alumna Rosemary Osmond remembers that transformative experience vividly, and she is now ensuring today’s students can make the most of it.

We are proud to announce that Rosemary (Class of 2000) has pledged £11,600 over the next five years to fund a suite of new awards specifically for Modern Languages students. Her gift aims to ease the financial pressure of international travel and work, allowing students to focus on what truly matters: their education and experience.

A personal connection

Rosemary’s decision to give back stems from her own fond memories of her time at Brookes and her year spent in Bordeaux.

“I had a very fulfilling time in so many ways, both in class and culturally,” Rosemary shares. “I know that it is always useful when one is given an experience like that to have a few extra sous in one’s pocket, which is why I decided to set up these awards to help language students during the formative – and fun – time of a year abroad.

The new awards

Starting this year, the following awards will support students as they navigate their international placements:

  • The Rosemary Osmond Study Abroad Grant (France): £1,200 to support study in France.
  • The Rosemary Osmond Work Placement Grant (Modern Languages): £1,200 for students undertaking professional placements abroad.
  • The Rosemary Osmond Prize for Best Achievement: A £500 prize recognising excellence during the placement year.

The power of giving

Rosemary’s generosity arrives at a crucial time. As the costs associated with international mobility rise, these grants offer more than just financial relief; they send a powerful message of encouragement to our linguists, letting them know the alumni community is rooting for their success.

You can make a difference, too. Philanthropy at Brookes isn't just about the figures; it’s about the impact. Whether it’s supporting a specific project, funding a scholarship, or contributing to student wellbeing, every gift helps bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity.

If you are inspired by Rosemary’s story and would like to support the next generation of Brookes students, please visit our Giving page or contact the Development and Alumni Relations team to discuss how you can leave your own legacy.

Thank you, Rosemary, for your incredible support and for showing our students what it means to be part of the Brookes family for life.
