Join our Subject Taster Days to gain first-hand experience of studying at university level and student life. You will have the opportunity to:

take part in lectures and interactive academic sessions

Each Subject Taster Day is free to attend and will give insight into a range of courses within a subject area. You can find a list of which courses are included during each Subject Taster Day below.

You can apply for a Subject Taster Day place as an individual or, if you are a teacher or adviser, you can apply for your school or college group below. For any enquiries please contact our team at schools.liaison@brookes.ac.uk.

Taster Day Programmes

Each Taster Day is free to attend and covers different topics and subject areas from one of our four faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Oxford Brookes Business School, Health and Life Sciences and Technology, Design and Environment.

Entrepreneurs in the Making (Completed)

Subjects included: Digital Marketing, Marketing Management, Business and Management, Hospitality and Events Management.

Event description:

During this Taster Day students will be tasked with coming up with a business idea for a sustainable, plant-based pop-up food space. Using our new Social Media Hub to help formulate their ideas, students must work together to produce a 5-10 minute presentation to showcase their business and a panel of Oxford Brookes Business School lecturers and students will give feedback on each presentation. Throughout the day, Oxford Brookes Business School student ambassadors will also be moving between the groups to offer advice and insights into their business ideas.

Power and Privilege (Completed)

Subjects include: Law, Criminology, Philosophy, History, Politics and English.

Event description: This Taster Day will explore ideas and thinking on the themes of Power and Privilege.

What is power and who holds it?
How does it influence our day to day lives?
How do we ensure that those who wield power treat everyone fairly?
How do we hold those with power to account?

We will consider why it's important to scrutinise and challenge conventional thinking and approach issues with open minds and fresh ideas. We will explore these themes from a range of perspectives with contributions from academics teaching for example, Law & Criminology, Politics, History & Philosophy and Education. Working in a range of disciplines you will undertake enquiring investigation into the world around us and our relationship to society and power, at the same time building critical and creative thinking skills vital for your future success.

NutriGuess Challenge: Decoding Fat & Sugar (Fully booked)

Event description:

This Taster Day offers an exploration of interactive elements of Nutrition at a university level. You will explore thematic components present in our undergraduate course, where academics and students will be present to share their insights and expertise.

Exploring Adult Nursing (Fully booked)

Subjects include: Adult Nursing

Event description:

This Taster Day offers an insight into the landscape of Adult Nursing at university. Explore the multifaceted nature of this discipline, its diverse career trajectories, and the promotional opportunities it presents. You will be able to engage in hands-on learning within a simulated clinical environment, guided by our team of Nursing academics, providing an authentic experience to develop your understanding and skills in the field.

Discover Occupational Therapy

Date: 1 May 2024

Subjects include: Occupational Therapy

This taster day will allow you to experience a comprehensive insight into the field of Occupational Therapy at a university level. Engage with key concepts developed by our academic staff as you learn and navigate our diverse modules, explore various career paths and uncover opportunities in the field, all through an interactive lens.

Engineering

Date: 8 May 2024

Time: 09:30-15:00

Location: Wheatley Campus

Subjects include: Motorsport Engineering

Our engineering taster day will give you a practical insight into the different courses we have to offer. You will participate in a variety of activities and explore our technology, like our Motorsport and robotics labs.

Teachers:

During the day, we will also be offering a mini CPD session for your staff attending, covering updated information from the sector and our courses, as well as a chance to network.

Computer Science

Date: 9 May 2024

Time: 09:30-15:00

Campus: Wheatley Campus

Subjects included: Computer Science

Our computer science Taster Day will give you a practical insight into the different courses we have to offer. You will participate in a variety of activities and explore our technology, like our VR Cave.

Teachers:

During the day, we will also be offering a mini CPD session for your staff attending, covering updated information from the sector and our courses, as well as a chance to network.

Art & Design

Date: 15 May 2024

Time: 09:30-15:00

Campus: Headington Campus

This Taster Day is a great opportunity for your learners to explore careers in the creative industries and serve as an introduction to the Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment. Learners will be provided with an introduction to different career pathways available through meeting Academic staff and current students. There will be guided tour of three of our Undergraduate degree programmes end of year exhibitions displaying the work of BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Photography and BA (Fine Art) across both the Richard Hamilton Building and our Glass Tank Gallery. There will be a wide range of contemporary themes to explore in the exhibitions including some interactive activities.

Architecture

Date: 22 May 2024

Time: 09:30-15:15

Location: Headington Campus

Subjects included: Architecture

This taster day will explore a range of different courses across the faculty, featuring workshop activities and talks from academic staff to explore key ideas and themes within different units of study. You will also be able to view the exhibition work of current students. You will get to experience workshops and talks from Architecture, Interior Architecture, Real Estate, Urban Design and Planning and Construction.

Schools and college bookings

How many students can I bring each day?

On each day you can bring up to 10 students.

We have increased capacity for the following days so can accept more students onto theses than the above maximum.

Do we need to send a staff member with our students?

Yes, we would expect a member of your staff to attend the day to support your students. On some of our days we are also offering a mini CPD session and a chance to network with our academics and other teachers attending the day. The days where this opportunity is available are stated in the descriptions.

Once I have filled out the booking form does that mean we have secured our places on the day?

Our Subject Taster Days are very popular and we receive a large volume of bookings for each day. Once you have filled in the booking form, a member of our team will be in contact within 5 working days to confirm if we can accommodate your booking.

Will lunch be provided on the day?

Unfortunately we are unable to provide lunch during this event and would encourage staff and students to bring a packed lunch on the day. If this is not possible there are a number of food outlets where lunch can be purchased and our staff will be able to help you locate these.

Student bookings

My school/college is not attending. Can I still book on?

Yes, if you are a student in your first year (or repeating your first year) of sixth form or college and you know your school/college is not bringing a group of students, you can fill in the form as an individual student.

Can I book on individually if my school and college are already attending the day?

No; if your school or college is already attending the day you would need to contact the teacher who is leading the event to state your interest. We can let you know who that teacher is if you are not sure.

Do I need to get permission to attend?

Yes. Once we have confirmed you have a place you will be required to have a parent/carer and teacher to fill in permission forms.

Do I need to book my own travel for the day?

You will need to book your own travel to and from the event and our team of Student Ambassadors will be available to meet you at the nearest bus stop to our campus. Our campuses are well connected by public transport.

Will lunch be provided on the day?

Unfortunately we are unable to provide lunch during this event and would encourage you to bring a packed lunch on the day. If this is not possible, there are a number of food outlets where lunch can be purchased and our staff will be able to help you locate these.
