The Big Exploration

This project is all about young, curious minds (that’s you!) finding out more about how university works.

How it works

We’ve made The Big Exploration for students in Year 5 and 6 in Oxfordshire, but anyone is more than welcome to get involved.

Over 6 weeks, you’ll find out about the research skills that are a really big part of studying at university. Along the way, you’ll also discover what it’s like to go to university, and some of the different subjects and topics you can learn about there. You’ll then get the chance to do your very own piece of research!

We’ll release part of the project for you every Monday, starting on 7th June 2021!

What you need so you can take part

We’ve designed the project so that all you’ll need is a way to view the worksheets and either watch the videos or read the transcripts. You’ll also need to bring all of your curiosity!

You might find the following things useful, but not essential:

  • Pen and paper
  • Printer

Why you should take part

“I would very much recommend the project to other schools … children have an innate fascination with the world, are curious and ask very thought provoking questions.

This was a real eye opener for them as many of them had no idea of the variety of possible jobs within science.

All of the activities as part of the workshop were thought provoking, challenging and fun.”

Philippa Ben-Aldjia, Science Coordinator at John Henry Newman Academy

Meet the team

The Big Exploration project has been built by Emily, Will and Catrin, who are part of the Schools and Colleges Team at Oxford Brookes University. We work with young people to explain what university is like and help them to learn more about the skills future university students need! We’re excited to give you a taster of university research, and explain a bit more about what goes on here.
