Research

Rehab is a quantitative and policy-oriented Economist. Her research covers areas such as natural resources and ecological economics, climate change and environment, agriculture and development, food security, energy policy, as well as trade and regional integration.

Rehab's particular technical expertise is designing and applying Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models using the advanced programming language General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS).

The unifying theme of her research is formulating a sustainable management framework for world natural resources. This is particularly well-placed to engage with the on-going debate on how economic policies should be designed to support low carbon emission, efficient usage of water, sustainable agriculture, and environmental development.

Research impact

Rehab is an active REF-able researcher with seminal empirical applications. She has strong abilities to analyse data in the context of complex models in areas of immediate environmental concern. The derived results from her quantitative analysis have had significant inferences and policy implications for a wide range of contemporary issues (e.g. the EU trade negotiation with African countries, the controversial debate over allocating water, renewable energy and hydroelectricity mega projects, and environmental degradation).

Rehab worked on different research projects with co-authors from various universities and international institutions (e.g., IDS, FAO, IFAD, ILO, IFPRI, GTAP, EC, WB and UN).

Her research attracted the Joint International Research Partnership Grant provided by OBU. As the PI, for a project titled “Developing a SAM/CGE Framework for Water Quality Assessment in Egypt Using Satellite Accounts”, she led various research tasks with co-authors from German, Italian and British universities as well as the European Commission.

She also collaborated with a multi-disciplinary research team and worked on Managing the Risks, Impacts and Uncertainties of drought and water Scarcity (MaRIUS) project. This Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)-funded project is located at the University of Oxford, with which she affiliated as a Visiting Research Associate.

Rehab has long experience in delivering and instructing high-quality training courses on SAM construction and CGE modelling. On this basis, the University of Hohenheim (Germany) appointed her as an International Advisor for the World Food Programme. She contributed to developing CGE models, constructing Social Accounting Matrices (SAMs), building capacity and providing technical support for Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), Egypt.
