Become a Student Governor

The University is seeking to appoint a second student member of its Board of Governors to increase the student voice in its decision-making.

The Board of Governors is the governing body of the University which is responsible for determining the overall mission and setting the educational character of Oxford Brookes. 

The Board is made up of 15 members, including the Vice-Chancellor, Brookes Union President, 11 independent members and two staff members.

What are we looking for?

We want a Student Governor to bring the full range of their knowledge, experience and expertise to bear on University business. The qualities required by Student Governors are those which are required of any Governor. You’ll have:

  • a strong commitment to the University’s guiding principles
  • a proven commitment to equality, diversity, inclusivity and transparency
  • an enthusiasm for higher education and to improve the University
  • effective people and communication skills
  • personal integrity and high ethical standards
  • respect for confidentiality.

What will you need to do?

The Board meets at least four times a year and as a Student Governor you’ll be expected to attend these meetings as well as being invited to attend other occasional meetings. This is a part-time, voluntary role and your commitment will be for approximately 10-14 days a year. You’ll contribute to debates and effective decision-making and you’ll need to analyse and understand complex information. 

In addition:

  • you must be a registered student (undergraduate or postgraduate) for the duration of your term on the Board
  • 1 September 2024 start date
  • one-year term with potential re-appointment for a further year.
