‘A strategic focus on excellent teaching quality’ Teaching Excellence Framework 2017 - Panel feedback
Oxford Brookes has also been awarded a Silver rating from the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). The sector-wide scheme is the first nationwide ranking for teaching excellence in UK universities and colleges. The Silver rating reflects the high standard of our teaching which consistently goes beyond the rigorous national quality requirements for UK higher education.
Based on the evidence available, the TEF Panel highlighted Oxford Brookes’ ‘strategic focus on excellent teaching quality including research-informed teaching’. The Panel also applauded the University’s developments in learning and teaching which are ‘consistently informed by the student voice’.
We are home to 11 National Teaching Fellows - the most prestigious award for excellence in higher education teaching. Our National Teaching Fellows work across a range of subjects from geography and architecture to business and education. Our academics also take part in innovative schemes which add value to their teaching.
Tina is one of the BBC Academy’s Expert Women - an ongoing campaign attempting to increase the number of expert female contributors on TV and radio. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour and BBC Radio Oxford talking about her influential research into contemporary family lives, which she brings to life through her teaching.
Danny is behind the innovative sports mentoring scheme Inside Track, which provides final year students with networking opportunities, the latest industry developments and thinking from leading organisations to help nurture their careers. It also provides new perspectives on sports science and coaching, keeping participants in touch with the latest academic thinking.
Jane won a National Teaching Award Fellowship in 2014 for her innovative use of live projects in architectural education. Students design and build real projects, such as a pop up cinema, commissioned by local communities, charities and organisations. They have enabled students to collaborate with clients, local government and industry experts, engaging in social and cultural issues and contributing to the local area.
Jonathan is a recipient of Senior Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in recognition of his commitment to high quality student learning and teaching. He is also the Faculty Champion for the Oxford Brookes Social Entrepreneur Programme (OBSEA), providing vital encouragement, support and expertise to help students undertaking funded projects that are designed to address some of the world’s pressing social issues.
Marc became a National Teaching Fellow in 2015. His teaching philosophy is to bring the study of law to life. A former practising solicitor, he focuses on helping his students develop highly sought after professional skills. Under his guidance, Oxford Brookes law students have won national and international competitions in client interviewing and mooting. He’s national adjudicator for the prestigious national ESU Mooting Competition.
Every year, our students get the opportunity to recognise members of staff who have made a real difference to their learning experience. In the Brookes Union Teaching Awards for 2018, more than 180 nominations were received for both academic and support staff.
Dr Mark Cain, Reader and Programme Lead for Philosophy and Religion, won the Most Inspirational Lecturer award. Students nominating Mark highlighted his passion for his subject and the outstanding support he provides for his students.
