The Dean's List

The Oxford Brookes Business School Dean’s List is a prestigious award aimed at celebrating those students who have made an exceptional contribution to the School, recognising individuals who have participated in activities reflective of the mission and vision of the School and the University’s Guiding Principles.

The Dean's List is open to final year undergraduate students and final year postgraduate or PhD taught students at Oxford Brookes Business School. The Dean encourages all students to work towards this award, the benefits of being awarded a place on the Dean's List being:

How to apply

The Dean’s List will be run twice a year to accommodate both September and January starters. 

Students should complete an application form and submit it together with any supporting evidence (eg. references, certificates etc) to Christel Söderholm, ctalbott@brookes.ac.uk by:

Successful applicants will be notified within 4 weeks of the application deadline.

Please note that students may only apply for either the Dean’s List Award or the AHSS Faculty prize in any one year and may only apply once for either award during their time at Oxford Brookes University.

Criteria

In order to be eligible for the Dean’s list, students must fulfil one of the criteria listed below.

1. Demonstrable, active and impactful engagement with an OBBS initiative or formal role, including but not limited to:

  • Education-related Task & Finish Projects, including involvement in the implementation of initiatives arising from the project
  • OBBS Green Impact Team
  • Student Ambassador, going above and beyond expectations in promoting the School
  • Student Representative
  • Leadership of an OBBS-associated Student Association or Society
  • Effective participation in the ACES programme in accounting and finance.

Recipients of a place on the Dean’s List are expected to demonstrate both sustained engagement in these activities or roles, as well as impact of their contribution. In other words, students are awarded a place for going above and beyond expectations.

2. Demonstrable success in a curricular or co-curricular activity as part of their programme, including but not limited to:
  • Success in a student competition (such as Business Challenge Week)
  • Outstanding achievement in an experiential learning activity that forms part of the curriculum (such as Dragons Den).

3. Extra-curricular activity that embodies the University’s Guiding principles of: connectedness, generosity of spirit, inclusivity, enterprising creativity, and confidence. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Success in an external competition related to their programme of study
  • Volunteering in the community (such as sustained and impactful work for a charity or third sector organisation) that aligns with the School’s priority to promote social responsibility and environmental sustainability
  • Successful entrepreneurial activity.

Students are encouraged to speak to their Academic Advisors and Subject Coordinators who will be able to offer advice relating to the type of experience which should be included in an application. As part of the application process, students will be required to reflect upon the impact of their experience on their own personal and professional development.

Judging of the Dean's List

The applications for the Dean’s List are judged by a Panel comprised of:

  • an Associate Dean of the Oxford Brookes Business School
  • a Visiting Industrial Fellow or Entrepreneur in Residence
  • a Programme Lead

Whilst the Panel’s judgement is final, unsuccessful applicants can request summary feedback on

their applications.
