Annelies Rowland

Role

Annelies is a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing at the Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery, Oxford Brookes University, with expertise in intensive care nursing and childhood and family bereavement support. Alongside her academic role, she works as a community childhood bereavement support practitioner, supporting children and families across Oxfordshire.

Annelies is also a PhD candidate in Psychology at the Centre for Psychological Research. Her primary research interests focus on family and childhood bereavement, particularly in the context of sudden and unexpected deaths. Her doctoral research project - The POSIE Study - explores the experiences of children, parents, and intensive care clinicians, with a specific focus on how children are supported when someone close to them is dying in the adult intensive care unit (ICU).

Modules taught

Annelies teaches across a range of pre- and post-registration modules within the Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery, both in the UK and internationally as part of the University’s flying faculty in Hong Kong. 

Annelies supervises undergraduate and Master’s dissertation projects and welcomes enquiries from students with an interest in the psychology of grief and childhood and family bereavement support.

Research

Currently undertaking a PhD with the Centre for Psychological Research, Annelies is exploring child-centred bereavement support in situations where someone significant to a child is dying in the adult intensive care unit (ICU). Her research - The POSIE Study - involves close collaboration and co-design with children, parents, and healthcare professionals, with the aim of informing and improving how children, families, and clinicians are supported during critical illness, dying, and bereavement.

Annelies is a member of the Children and Young People Network at Oxford Brookes University.
