Critical Perspectives on Law, Gender and Diversity (CPLGD)

Group Leader: Dr Rebecca Rose Nocella

About us

Our group is interested in socio-legal approaches to law, with a particular sensitivity toward critical and gendered lenses. We critique the law through theoretical frameworks such as feminist legal theory, queer theory, deconstructivism, and critical race theory. Rather than taking the law as a given, we reimagine it through critical theory, identifying gaps within legal systems and exploring original ways to empower the most vulnerable in society. Our work challenges hegemonic approaches that have traditionally underpinned legislatures.

Research impact

Because our research critiques the law, it usually centres on a group of vulnerable individuals in need of empowerment. Some members of the group undertake qualitative empirical research to listen to the voices of those affected by dominant socio-economic structures. At times, in collaboration with charities and research participants, our work seeks to instigate policy change.
