  • Postgraduate

Specialists in International Law, we offer a range of LLM programmes as well as interdisciplinary opportunities provided though collaboration with our colleagues in the School of Law.

When it comes to a career in Law, our professionally focused courses – at one of the UK’s top law schools – will give you the competitive edge in skills, knowledge and training.

  • Real world teaching

    • A focus on practical skills through mooting (see below), mock trials and client-interviewing competitions, and real-world experience through volunteering
    • An emphasis on legal reasoning, research skills, and international law, areas that are increasingly vital in a competitive, globalised workplace
    • Research-enhanced teaching where, rarely for UK universities, leading academics teaching on research-informed programmes work alongside experienced practitioners
    • Research seminars open to all enabling you to engage with the very latest research findings
    • Expert tuition from experienced practitioners with exceptional levels of one-to-one support along with a personal careers tutor allocated to each student

    Great resources

    • Unparalleled access to legal holdings in the campus library and the Bodleian Law Library.
    • A new fully-functioning moot court with courtroom furniture donated by the Ministry of Justice for mooting competitions, workshops on communication skills for lawyers, and other events.
    • A thriving legal community in Oxford comprising leading law firms with whom we have strong links – along with other major law firms. We host regular presentations by Thames Valley lawyers on the graduate recruitment process and life as a solicitor.
    • An award-winning pro bono scheme winner of the Solicitors Pro Bono Group national award, which enables you to build workplace skills as a volunteer. Recent projects have included working with asylum seekers and mentoring with the Oxfordshire Youth Offending Team.
    • A new mentoring programme helping students wishing to pursue a career at the Bar and who are facing the intense competition that exists for pupillages and tenancies. Andrew Kopkin, Senior Lecturer in Legal Skills and Practice - himself a barrister - set up the scheme with the assistance of members of the Bar. It aims to match students with practising barristers, in their areas of interest, to offer advice, support and professional networks.

    Beyond Brookes

    • Prestigious scholarships from the Inns of Court in London have been won by Brookes students to study for the Bar professional training course. In 2013 one student on the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) won two scholarships from the Inner Temple and two others were awarded the Lord Denning Scholarship by Lincoln’s Inn and the Shakespeare Memorial Award by Gray’s Inn.
    • Excellent employment prospects with recent graduates going on to work in government, the law profession and for global organisations including the United Nations, the International Criminal Court in The Hague and in the legal departments of multinationals such as BP. Other recent employers have included Cancer Research UK, Morgan Cole Solicitors and HMV.
