Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP)

Introduction

Some people have difficulties getting themselves out of a building unaided. The aim of a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is to provide them with the necessary information to be able to manage their escape to a place of safety and to give faculties and directorates the necessary information so as to ensure that the correct level of assistance is available.

Lifts should not be used in the event of a fire evacuation.

General Emergency Evacuation Plans (GEEPs)

As the name suggests a GEEP provides general advice to all building occupants on what to do in a fire evacuation. The majority of buildings at OBU (those with a lift) have refuge areas which are a safe place in a building where people can wait for help during an emergency evacuation. These have communication devices to allow people to speak to our security staff.

Full details of building GEEPs and the location of refuge areas can be found on this GEEPs page

Guidance for drawing up a PEEP

New students with disability/health issues going into residencies will complete their application for residencies on StarRes and where they indicate they have a disability/health issue they will be asked to complete a specific set of pre-PEEP questions. Where these indicate a full PEEP is required the residential team will be notified as will Inclusive Support. The residential team will arrange to complete a full PEEP for the student for the accommodation they are in.

Inclusive support will also be notified for their awareness who will inform and the Heads of Operation within the Faculties for them to arrange a full PEEP for the students academic buildings.

For new students with disability/health issues NOT going into residencies, the Inclusive Support team will arrange for them to complete the initial PEEP form. Where this indicates the need for a full PEEP, the students details will be forwarded on to the Heads of Operation within the Faculties for them to arrange a full PEEP for the students academic buildings.

For new staff, where the occupational health pre-placement process recommends a PEEP be considered, the People Directorate Operations team will notify the line manager advising them to arrange for the staff member to complete the initial PEEP form. Where this indicates the need for a full PEEP, this is for the line manager to complete with the staff member concerned.

The Health and Safety team are available to advise those undertaking the PEEP assessments and will monitor the register of PEEPs to ensure (where needed) they are appropriately updated.
