Dissertation essentials: Understanding qualitatative research (5 February)

Understand key features of qualitative research and how to choose the right path for your research study

This session unpacks what is meant by research methodology and philosophy of research to help you see where your research study fits into the broader sphere of research methods. It will explore types of qualitative research such as interviews and focus groups, as well as systematic reviews (which can be qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods) and will consider methods for analysing qualitative data. The benefits and challenges of different approaches to qualitative data collection and analysis will also be discussed. This session should help you to make appropriate choices about the type of research you want to conduct, and if you have already chosen a qualitative path, it should give you confidence when writing about your choices in your methodology chapter.
