Modules and credits

Upon successful completion of modules studied at your host university, you will be awarded transferred credits, not grades/marks, that will count towards your degree at Oxford Brookes.

Please refer to our table about credits equivalences depending on the university, for more information

Agreeing your modules

Once your modules have been approved and signed off by the relevant member of staff in your faculty, please add them to your Learning Agreement and take the form with your full application to the Exchanges Office.

After enrolling at your exchange university, you might be required to make changes to your original Learning Agreement. Please ensure that any module change is approved and signed off by the person who signed your original Learning Agreement and recorded on your Learning Agreement Changes form (you will find the template on your workflow on Mobility Online).

Failure to seek approval and signature from the relevant staff members for any module changes will result in NO credit transfer.

Workload and credits

You will enrol for 30 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits for one semester or 60 ECTS for a whole academic year.

  • 7.5 ECTS = 1 single Oxford Brookes module
  • 1 semester = 30 ECTS credits = 4 single Brookes modules (7.5 x 4 = 30)
  • 2 semesters = 60 ECTS credits = 8 single Brookes modules (7.5 x 8 = 60)

International exchanges

International exchange universities may not use the ECTS system. If you are still unsure about the number of their credits equivalent to 30 ECTS credits, please check your nomination email or see our credit equivalence tables:

Registering your exchange on your programme

Please add the module "On Exchange" to your programme (if applicable) by completing the M100EX form which can be done via Moodle. This will then be approved by the Exchanges Team and will delete any existing modules for the semester(s) you are on exchange.

How are the credits transferred?

Most host institutions will send your transcript to the Global Engagement Team. They will either provide us with an electronic copy of your transcript or hard copy.

Please note: NO transcript = NO transfer of credits.

Degree classification

You will be awarded transferred credits NOT GRADES/MARKS that will count towards your degree at Oxford Brookes.

After spending one semester abroad (and bringing back 30 ECTS/60 UK credits):

Subject to the modules you have already passed, you would normally be in a position where you would need to complete 4 x acceptable level 5 credits including any compulsory requirements of your Stage II (year 2) programme. You would also need to complete 8 x acceptable level 6 Honours modules in your final year.

After spending one year abroad (and bringing back 60 ECTS/120 UK credits):

Subject to the modules that you have already passed, you would normally be in a position where you need to complete 8 x acceptable level 6 Honours modules in your final year.
It is important that you study at your current level and make sure that you have enough credit to progress to the next level on your return to Oxford Brookes. For more information on degree classification please read the Academic Framework Regulations and discuss his with the relevant member of staff in your faculty.
The calculation of the degree classification is entirely independent of the calculation of the GPA. Modules passed or failed while on exchange will NOT be used to calculate the GPA.
