Location

Oxford is a global media city

Full attention is paid to the changing models of journalism, from branded content and not-for-profit journalism to big data scraping and social media crowdsourcing. Students grow their skills in digital and multi-platform journalism and authorship and form an understanding of the different ways of presenting information and published content. There is an emphasis on writing, authorship and commercially relevant journalism throughout the programmes, and you will come out of the programmes with a portfolio of content, across media formats, relevant to roles across the media and in other organisations where there is a need to communicate to external audiences.

Industry models and key practical skills are addressed alongside the importance of the media in society. The programmes provide you with an academically rigorous and professionally relevant education, and there is a wide choice of optional modules. The beautiful city of Oxford is home to many media professionals and there are more published writers per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

All our journalism students have the opportunity to do work experience during their course. This enables them to apply what they learn in a real environment, gain a greater understanding of how the industry works, and develop a network of contacts that will be invaluable to them in their career.

The Journalism Diversity Fund (JDF) awards bursaries to people from diverse backgrounds who need help with funding. The fund is aimed at aspiring journalists without the financial means to attend an NCTJ-accredited course who can show they can bring diversity to a newsroom. Bursaries are awarded four times per year and can help cover the costs of fees and/or living expenses.

“I've absolutely loved my time at Oxford Brookes. Even with the unusual circumstances this year, studying in the middle of a pandemic, this course has been a real confidence boost. It has allowed me to develop and grow - both as a journalist, and as a person. It's also offered me the chance to work with industry professionals and develop my skills and understanding of the industry in a way I never would have been able to without this opportunity. I can't thank the staff enough. So, to anyone considering the course, I say go for it. You won't regret it.”
