Alumni spotlight: Jamila Okoro's global marketing journey

Alumna Jamila Okoro shares how her MSc in Digital Marketing prepared her for a global role at Stryker, a global American company.

This Semester we caught up with Oxford Brookes alumnus Jamila Okoro. Jamila studied MSc Digital Marketing and now works for Stryker, a global American company. One of the highlights of her time at Oxford Brookes was the international study trip to Boston where she had the opportunity to visit numerous prestigious companies. The trip focused on different aspects of marketing in addition to other areas of business including economics and HR. 

During her studies, Jamila especially enjoyed the Global Marketing module. This module helped her understand cultural differences and how different cultures operate in a business setting, for example in terms of how people approach meetings. This has helped her when meeting international colleagues. The Digital Marketing Analytics module focussed on using Excel and other analytical software, which she has used in her daily working life. Jamila also found group work a challenge initially but is now using the skills learned through group work in her current job and finds it easier to collaborate with her colleagues in a professional capacity. 

Jamila acknowledges that her dissertation supervisor was a huge source of encouragement, particularly when faced with the challenge of finishing her dissertation and starting her role with Stryker. She also recommends making use of the academic librarians and lecturers’ office hours, both of which provided her with help and support when needed.
