Research is the foundation for excellence throughout our activities as confirmed by our results in the RAE 2008. We include aspects of our research in all our courses, we teach specialist modules in our areas of expertise and we supervise dissertations in our specialist subjects. We encourage students at every level of study to become involved through our seminar series, research centres and special interest research groups.

Consultancy and knowledge transfer

It has a team of experienced consultants whose skills encompass expertise in adults' services, children's services, housing and community health care.

Athena SWAN

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) achieved an Athena SWAN Bronze award in 2020. This recognises our commitment to gender equality and our adoption of the Athena SWAN Charter.

A culture of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is part of our DNA, and our EDI strategy is overseen by a member of the faculty’s senior management. We are proud that Professors in HSS are equally likely to be male or female. Nearly half of the faculty’s executive leadership board is female, and over half of academic School Heads are female.
