UREC Terms of Reference

  • Report directly to the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research & Global Partnerships and University Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee (RKEC)
  • Meet a minimum of twice a semester during the academic year
  • Oversee University guidance, policies and procedures for research ethics approval
  • Strategically review and update University research ethics guidance, policies and procedures in the light of external best practice and of funders, professional, and statutory body requirements
  • Monitor the two Research Ethics Sub-Committees – Cross-Faculty Research Ethics Sub-Committee (CRES) and the Health and Social Care Cross-Faculty Research Ethics Sub-Committee (HSCRES)
  • Receive audits of research ethics compliance with the University Code for Academic Integrity and responds accordingly, including to any notification of breaches of the University’s ethical standards and procedures
  • Liaise with the Associate Deans for Research and Knowledge Exchange in each Faculty to ensure that they have put in place robust procedures for ethical review in each subject area
  • Consider and advise on applications with highly complex or sensitive issues submitted by the Sub-Committees
