Student cards

Your student ID card proves that you are a student at Oxford Brookes University. You will need this card to get books out of the library and access the campuses outside of normal service hours.

As part of your enrolment process you have the option to provide your preferred pronouns which will be printed on your student card. You can read more about pronouns in the FAQ section below.

You will be emailed when your card is ready for collection but this will only be once you have completed online enrolment and uploaded a photo. If you enrolled very recently, please note that it takes approximately a week for your card to be produced and sent to campus ready for collection. You won't need to use your student card for much in the first couple of weeks of semester so don't worry if there is a wait to receive yours.

Please do not come to collect your card until you have received the email confirming that it is ready.

Getting your student card

You need to fully complete your enrolment before your student ID can be sent to be printed.
When you enrol, you will need to upload a photo. This photo needs to be suitable for use as photo ID, i.e. it must be a clear photo of your face. This photo will appear on your student card.
As part of enrolment, you will be asked to specify your 'preferred name'. A preferred name is any first name you chose to use while you are at university. This name will be printed on your student card along with your surname.
Once your card has arrived at the University, we will email you and let you know when and where you can collect it from. This email will come through to your Oxford Brookes email account.
Please ensure you bring photo ID with you when you come to collect your card. Examples of suitable ID include a passport or driving licence.
Please note we will only hold your student card until the end of the semester. After that, for security reasons, any uncollected cards will be destroyed. If you do not collect your card before then and you need it later, you will need to purchase a replacement card.

FAQs

What do I need my student card for?

You need your student ID card to confirm your identity for your exams. The card can also be used to access some buildings out of hours, to borrow items from the library, and to identify yourself if requested by University staff while on campus.

You can use your student ID card to travel on Oxford Bus Company buses at the discounted price of £1.80 per trip. Simply show your card to the driver to obtain the discount.

I don't have my card yet, can I use the library?

You can still study in the library, read books and journals online before you receive your card. If you would like to borrow books, please go to the library help desk.

I don't have my card yet. How can I prove my status as a student if I want to open a bank account or if somebody asks me?

Provided you have enrolled, you can request an attendance letter. It takes one working day to be produced and then can be downloaded as a PDF. You can use this as proof of your status as a student.

I would like to know more about pronouns on student cards.

As part of your enrolment process you have the option to provide your preferred pronouns which will be printed on your student card. It is entirely optional as to whether you have your pronouns displayed on your student card or not. If you do not wish to have your pronouns displayed, then please chose the option 'Prefer not to say' from the drop-down menu when you are completing your online enrolment.

How do I change details on my student card before it is printed?

If you need to correct errors before your card is printed

If you don’t upload a suitable ID photo or you incorrectly entered your preferred name during enrolment, this will delay the printing of your student card. You need to correct these before the card can be printed. Remember:

Photo ID must be clearly of your face - if you have uploaded an unclear photo or one taken from too far away, a photo of multiple people, or a photo of something or someone else, that cannot be used as ID for you.
Your preferred name should be either your first name or any alternative first name you chose to use while you are at university. Do not also enter your surname in the preferred name field or it will appear twice. Your preferred name will be used on your Google and Moodle accounts and for any informal documentation (e.g. registers).

If you've already fully completed online enrolment and need to change your name or photo, please follow the below steps:

Click the grid in the top left corner
Select 'Banner'
Select 'Student'
Select 'Update Personal Information'

How do I change details on my student card once it has already been printed?

If you have received your student ID card and find that details on it need changing, please contact studentcentral@brookes.ac.uk. Please note that depending on the reason, this may incur a cost. The Student Central Advice Team can advise you about this.

I am a distance-learning student, do I have to come and pick up my card?

You only need to collect your student card if you are:

studying within the UK, and
need to access the Oxford Brookes buildings or library.

Otherwise you have full access to the online materials without a student card.

What do I do if I lose my student card?

If your student ID card is lost or damaged, you will need to order a replacement from the online shop.
