This online course explores fundamental and advanced psychological skills, building on your existing experience and using scenario-based exercises.

Online learning is divided into 6 learning units, each running over a 2 week period.

The aim of this course is to equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to develop supportive and therapeutic relationships with your patients or clients. It will introduce you to counselling skills and advanced psychological techniques including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing.

Course cost: £300 per student

Learning

Learning is divided into 6 learning units, each running over a 2 week period. This will give you flexibility in how you use your time, though you will also be given guidance on how to pace your learning. Each learning unit will include the following:

  • personal reflection on practice in a personal learning log
  • recorded video presentations on key topics
  • guided reading (all reading material is available online)
  • discussion forums which the students can participate in at a time of their choosing

In addition, there will be group tutorials when all of the students participate in a live Zoom meeting with the course leader. Some learning units will also have videos and other specific exercises, and there will be a skills workshop in the last learning unit. The 6 learning units are:

  • communication: process and context
  • working with difficult situations
  • working with families and organisations
  • psychological approaches to relationships 1: Counselling and the caring relationship
  • psychological approaches to relationships 2: CBT and Motivational Interviewing
  • self-care, boundaries and supervision.
