I found all the staff on my course very approachable and willing to help with recommended reading and advice on essays

After completing a BSc in Social Science at Cardiff University in 2009, Rebecca Ganz moved to Oxford to work. She began her studies at Oxford Brookes on a part-time basis, working flexible, full-time hours while completing her MA.

I was interested in studying International Development, but also wanted to have a broader introduction to the field of International Relations. The MA in International Studies at Brookes offered this, in addition to being a highly respected university and local to where I live.

I liked that the core modules offered a broad and comprehensive introduction to the subject, as well as having a wide variety of optional modules to choose from.

I found all the staff on my course very approachable and willing to help with recommended reading and advice on essays. I was especially grateful for the support of my dissertation supervisor, Stephen Hurt, who helped me design an achievable project and stay focused on the topic. Seminars were lively and I thoroughly enjoyed getting involved in debates and discussions. All the lecturers and other students were enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly.

Oxford has a general atmosphere of learnedness that I found helpful, especially as I had to find time to study around a full-time job. It was also helpful to have access to the Bodleian libraries in addition to Oxford Brookes’ facilities.

Also, studying alongside a full-time job has really helped to develop my organisational, planning and research skills!
