Postgraduate research fees

These are the postgraduate research fees for the 2025/2026 academic year. Fees can be paid in 3 instalments in September, January and June, as set out in the ‘My Account’ section in your Student Self-Service Portal. 

Fees quoted are for the first year only. If you are studying a course that lasts longer than one year, your fees will increase each year.

For International fees the following factors will be taken into account by the University when it is setting the annual fees: inflationary measures such as the retail price indices, projected increases in University costs, changes in the level of funding received from Government sources, admissions statistics and access considerations including the availability of student support.

Home fees are set by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and are released approximately five months before the start of each academic year.

Home students

The fee information below applies to students who are eligible to pay the 'Home' fee rate, and are studying on any research degree apart from Professional Doctorates which are listed on separate pages (DCM, EdD, DNurs, DMid).

Bench Fees
Bench fees will be calculated on an individual basis and the amount will depend on the subject and project. In some cases no bench fee will be charged.

Note on fees

Please note all students must pay these fees as follows:

  • All full-time MPhil/PhD students are required to pay the full-time fee for three complete academic years before they are eligible to pay the continuation fee. 
  • All part-time MPhil/PhD students are required to pay the part-time fee for six complete academic years before they are eligible to pay the continuation fee.
  • All full-time Masters by Research Students are required to pay the full-time fee for a minimum of one year or maximum of two years if approved.
  • All part-time Masters by Research Students are required to pay the full-time fee for a minimum of two years or maximum of two years if approved.
  • All students eligible to pay the Home fee rate studying on the PhD by Published Work programme, are required to pay the fee for a minimum of one year or up to submission of thesis for examination if longer.
