Sports Scholarships

Each year, we award Sports Scholarships to Oxford Brookes students who demonstrate outstanding talent and success in their chosen sport. Each scholarship is tailored to meet the individual needs of the athlete, ensuring they have the support necessary to excel both academically and athletically.

Our Sports Scholars can receive tailored support valued at over £5,000, which may include:

Access to Brookes Sport Gym facilities and Fitness Classes through a Fitness Membership
Complimentary TEAMBrookes Membership, essential for joining a sports club and representing in BUCS competitions
Full TEAMBrookes Under Armour tracksuit
Sports-specific Strength & Conditioning and Nutritional support
Free or subsidised Physiotherapy, including screening, soft tissue therapy, prehab, and reactive services
Sports Psychology and Performance Lifestyle sessions
Assistance with Academic Flexibility

Eligibility criteria

Sports Scholarships are awarded on a case-by-case basis and all sports are considered. However, priority is given to individual's whose sport features within Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth and/or the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programmes.

New for 2024

Students who meet one of the following criteria will be viewed more favorably as we expand our Sports Scholarship opportunities:

Performance Scholarship: Designed for student-athletes competing nationally or internationally, prioritising our performance team sports like Men’s & Women’s Hockey and Women’s Lacrosse.
International Scholarship: Open to talented international athletes interested in studying at Oxford Brookes, prioritising sports such as American Football, Badminton and Table Tennis.
Access Scholarship: Tailored for athletes excelling in sports not currently offered at Oxford Brookes or those who do not meet other scholarship criteria. Applicants must provide recommendations and supporting statements from their National Governing Body/Sport England. Additional eligibility factors include various personal circumstances such as being from a minority ethnic background, come from a lower socio-economic background or having a disability.

These scholarships reflect Oxford Brookes' commitment to fostering diversity and supporting athletes across a broad spectrum of sports and backgrounds.

To qualify for a Sports Scholarship, you must:

Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program at Oxford Brookes University, or be in the process of applying to become a student at Oxford Brookes University for the upcoming academic year
Demonstrate a high level of achievement in your sport, either at the academy, national, or international level, or show strong evidence of outstanding potential for future success

Advice for applicants

When applying for a Sports Scholarship, please note the following:

Experience level or previous awards do not guarantee a successful application
Sports Scholars are expected to represent Oxford Brookes in all competitions and attend all club training sessions
If your initial application is unsuccessful, you may reapply in subsequent academic years
Sports Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis; successful applicants must reapply each year to continue receiving support
Returning Sports Scholars must demonstrate BUCS success unless they provide medical evidence of injury prior to the BUCS event

How to apply

Applications for the 2024/25 academic year are now open. The deadline for applications is 12:00-noon on Wednesday 4 September.

All applications are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, so please make sure that you include as much relevant information as you can.

Exception - Cricket

As a student at Oxford Brookes, male cricketers have the opportunity to play for the Men's Oxford, University Centre of Cricketing Excellence (Oxford UCCE), which is combined with Oxford University. This is one of the six academy-sponsored centres of cricketing excellence in the UK.

Students selected for the Oxford UCCE programme train daily from November through to the end of June, supported by expert coaches across all disciplines of the game. Additionally, all players recieve team strength & conditioning programming throughout the year.

Please not that selection to the Men's Oxford UCCE squad is akin to a "cricket scholarship" due to the level of support and resource involved in the programme. Trials take place in October and you must register your interest by Friday 27 September 2024.

Our Sports Scholarships do welcome applications from those who play women's cricket.

Exception - Rowing

Oxford Brookes University Boat Club (OBUBC) stands as one of the leading university boat clubs in Europe, boasting a distingused history of both domestic and international achievements. Rowers associated with Brookes Rowing have consistently competed in every U23 World Championships and have achieved medals at every Olympic Games since 2000.

Dual-career students selected for the Brookes Rowing squads are automatically entered into the Performance Grant Scheme each academic year, liminating the need for separate applications to qualify. Grants are awarded twice yearly to dual-career students based on their ongoing performance, assessed continuously by our rowing coaches throughout the year.

Please be aware that selection to the OBUBC squads is the sole criterion considered for Boat Club scholarships.
