Sports Scholarships

Each year we award up to 15 Sports Scholarships to Oxford Brookes students who show outstanding talent and success in their chosen sport. Each award is tailored to the needs of the athlete, to ensure that everything is put in place to help them achieve both academic and sporting success.

Our Sports Scholars can receive bespoke support worth in excess of £5,000, which may include:

Monetary bursary, up to £500
All-inclusive Gym membership for Brookes Sport facilities and fitness classes
Complimentary TEAMBrookes membership, required to join a sports club and represent in BUCS competition
Full TEAMBrookes Under Armour tracksuit
Sports-specific Strength & Conditioning training and Nutritional support
Free or subsidised Physiotherapy including screening, soft tissue therapy, prehab and reactive services
Sports Psychology and Performance Lifestyle sessions
Support with Academic Flexibility

Eligibility

Sports Scholarships are awarded on a case-by-case basis. Priority is given to individual's whose sport features within Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth and/or the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programmes. Other sports are still considered on a case-by-case basis.

To qualify for a Sports Scholarship, you must:

Be currently enrolled on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree course at Oxford Brookes University, or in the process of applying to become an Oxford Brookes University student for the upcoming academic year
Be of academy, national or international standard in your sport or show strong evidence of future outstanding potential

Advice for applicants

When applying for a Sports Scholarship, please be aware of the following:

Experience level or previous awards are not a guarantee of a successful application
Sports Scholars must compete for Oxford Brookes in all competitions and attend all club training sessions
If you are unsuccessful in your application the first time around, you can apply again in the following academic years
Sports Scholarships are valid for one academic year only; successful scholars must reapply if they wish to continue to receive support
Returning Scholars will be required to demonstrate BUCS success, unless medical evidence of injury can be presented at the time of the BUCS event

How to apply

Applications for 2023-24 are now Closed. The deadline for applications was 12:00-noon on Wednesday 23rd August 2023.

Applications for 2024-25 will open in April 2024. To apply, applicants will complete the Sports Scholarship application form.

All applications are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, so please make sure that you include as much relevant information as you can.

Exception - Cricket

**Subject to change**

As a student at Oxford Brookes, male cricketers have the opportunity to play for the Men's Oxford University Centre of Cricketing Excellence (combined with Oxford University). This is one of the six academy-sponsored centres of cricketing excellence in the UK.

Students who are selected for the Oxford UCCE programme train daily from November through to the end of June, supported by expert coaches across all disciplines of the game. In addition, all players are provided with team strength & conditioning programming throughout the year.

Please note that selection to the Men's Oxford UCCE squad is reflective of a "cricket scholarship" due to the level of support and resource involved in the programme. If you would like to trial for the Oxford UCCE, you must register your interest by Friday 29th September, 2023.

Exception - Rowing

Oxford Brookes University Boat Club is one of the strongest undergraduate boat clubs in Europe with a long history of domestic and international success. Brookes students and alumni have also competed at every U23 World Championships and medalled at every Olympic Games since 2000.

Brookes’ dual-career students who are selected for the squads are automatically entered into the Performance Grant Scheme each academic year, so no applications are required to be eligible.

Grants are awarded twice yearly to dual-career students based on their performance and are continually assessed by our rowing coaches throughout the year.

Please note that selection to the OBUBC squads is the only level considered for Boat Club scholarships.
