My year abroad can only be described as an adventure! I was a language assistant in three primary schools in Orleans, south of Paris. One of my schools was quite challenging with discipline problems but I thoroughly enjoyed my teaching experience.

It was so much fun working with the kids and really making a difference in the school. They shared the same enthusiasm for learning a language and loved learning about English culture and playing my ridiculous games. Outside school I really took advantage of being in France. I was a volunteer at the secours populaire twice a week, I tutored English, I worked at a paintball centre and I trained with the women’s handball team twice a week.

During the holidays I also worked at a kids’ sports camp and embraced the opportunity to explore France. I went skiing with French friends in Grenoble, visited several cities including Brussels, Biarritz, Lyon and Nice and enjoyed spontaneous camping weekends outside Orleans. The year abroad offers so many random experiences and exciting opportunities. You come back not only with more fluent French, a newfound appreciation for the culture but also many happy memories.
