After finishing her A-Levels in Maths, Drama and Dance, Libby spent 10 weeks in Guildford at Performance Preparatory Academy studying Musical Theatre. She then worked as a Teaching Assistant in a school in Ascot before coming to study Primary Teacher Education at Oxford Brookes.

I decided to study the BA Primary Teacher Education course because it offered me what I needed to become a teacher. I felt it would give me the subject knowledge and enough placements to feel comfortable teaching after 3 years.

Before starting my course, I heard from Headteachers that they consider an Oxford Brookes teaching degree to be of a very high standard. The Ofsted reports also spoke very highly of the teaching here and there is a high percentage of Brookes graduates who have secured teaching posts. Studying in Oxford city and Harcourt Hill Campus are two other main prospects that attracted me to study this course. I had a great feel for the campus when I came to visit and liked the fact it had a small community feel to it. With a library, gym and pool onsite, you don’t have to travel far to get what you need.

Now I’m studying here, the support from the staff is one of the best things about the course – having a personal tutor for all three years has made a lot of difference. Course tutors are very helpful about assignments and reply to emails quickly. Tutors have also offered to support us once we begin teaching, for subject knowledge, lesson ideas and resources. Not only that but the modules are varied and the assignments are useful to teaching in practice.

Oxford itself is a very vibrant city with endless things to do. Buses can take you everywhere and from Harcourt Hill Campus you can be in the town centre in 30 minutes. As a teacher the range of museums is amazing!

The leaders of our course ensure a consistent approach across all modules and are always around for a chat. Lecturers who have just come out of teaching themselves are so helpful because they can talk about the practical issues of the theory we are leaning about and give us extremely helpful examples.

After I graduate, I hope to continue developing as a teacher. Brookes have been extremely supportive in helping us to secure our first post; we have a lecture every other week about making applications, interviews and how to prepare for our first job. Employers know that we have high quality school placements and that Brookes promote determination and independence. I cannot fault the support!
