The excellent reputation of the University was a big draw for me, especially knowing the depth of experience and knowledge of the teaching staff

Prior to starting her Early Childhood Studies degree at Oxford Brookes Samantha Wise had a range of jobs in the IT and Financial sectors and then became a Deputy Manager in an Early Years setting, managing and supervising staff, children, and families.

I decided to study the BA in Early Childhood studies because I wanted to develop my knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Sector and felt this degree was highly appropriate and very relevant.

During the degree I explored key aspects of early childhood education and care that were of particular interest to me. It enabled me to build my academic skills and progress onto the PGCE, whereupon I now teach in Further Education subjects relevant to my degree and vocation (Children’s, Care, Learning and Development).

The excellent reputation of the University was a big draw for me, especially knowing the depth of experience and knowledge of the teaching staff. Alison Street and Nick Swarbrick in particular were inspirational, giving practical advice and being very supportive. The course also fitted in with my work commitments and I have kept in contact with the other mature students who were on the course with me. We meet up regularly and share vocational experiences and best practices.

The library at Harcourt Hill was truly fantastic. The staff there were always helpful and would help out with all manner of queries. The range of books on offer was another outstanding feature, and being able to purchase old books no longer used was brilliant for future reference.

Achieving the BA (Hons) has enabled me to teach in Further Education and progress onto the PGCE. I am now more employable in the field that I wish to pursue, and without a doubt it has helped me to launch my new career path. I have always wanted to teach and now I am teaching in FE subjects that fascinate me. I would like to undertake a Masters when I have finished my PGCE. My future career aspiration is to teach in Higher Education.
