About the course

Genetics is at the heart of understanding how traits are inherited, why individuals differ, and how genes influence health and disease. Whether you're looking to refresh your knowledge before postgraduate study or deepen your understanding of this fascinating subject, this course provides a solid introduction to the core principles of genetics and genomics.

Recent advances in genomic technologies have transformed our understanding of human biology and are driving developments in areas such as disease diagnosis, personalised medicine and healthcare. By building a strong foundation in the key concepts of genetics, you'll be well prepared to explore this rapidly evolving field and develop the knowledge needed for further study in Medical Genetics & Genomics.

Whether you are returning to study or would simply like to strengthen your knowledge, this online course provides the opportunity to refresh the fundamental principles of inheritance, genetics and genome structure. These concepts form the foundation of the teaching and learning approaches used throughout the MSc Medical Genetics & Genomics.

Learning units

1. Genetics: 

Refresher on Mendelian Genetics and terminology; Redundancy of the Genetic code; Introduction to the human genome and its composition; Bacteria and Virus Genetics; Population Genetics

2. Genetic analyses:

Population Genetics introduction - Genetic variation (polymorphism) in natural populations: Types of variation; Measurement and analysis of genetic variation; Calculation of allele and genotype frequencies; Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium; Population genetic (microevolutionary) processes: mutation and drift, selection (different types). Biomed examples, e.g. Sickle cell anaemia, CFTR; Phylogenetics - Types, construction, assumptions, and interpretation of simple phylogenetic trees; neutral theory; molecular clocks and evolutionary rates. HIV story. 

3. Bioinformatics introduction:

Genome Browsers; BLAST; Ensembl; Genomic Variation; Genome Sequencing Projects introduction (GWAS) 

The course will take around 50 hours to complete, through independent learning that accounts for listening to recorded material, note taking, revising, and taking formative and summative quizzes. Opportunities for additional reading/resources will be also offered to facilitate learning.

This online course provides an introduction to the basic concepts within the field of genetics (such as population genetics and phylogenetics), and basic computational analyses commonly used in genetic analyses. The course focuses on biomedical applications of these techniques, providing an introduction to concepts and techniques that you will encounter in more depth on the MSc in Medical Genetics & Genomics.
