  • At Oxford Brookes, we are very proud of our track record with gender equality.  The Athena SWAN Charter recognises advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success for all.

In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.  The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

Oxford Brookes University was awarded its first University-wide bronze award in 2012 and in 2015, the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences were successful in its application for a silver departmental award.  The Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment will apply for a bronze departmental award at the end of 2015.

The University provides high quality training and development for both women and men through the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development.  We offer both the Springboard Women’s Development Programme, and its equivalent for men, the Navigator.

We are also actively engaged in the Leadership Foundation’s Aurora women-only leadership development programme.

The Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice has carried out research into  women’s under-representation in senior roles in higher education, and developed interventions.

We have developed policies to support all staff in achieving a good work-life balance.  Our  flexible working policy allows any member of staff to request flexible working, subject to operational requirements.  We support staff in their family life through our  maternity leaveshared parental leave and  parental  and adoption support leave policies.

We also offer a Career Break policy and staff can request to purchase an additional five days’ annual leave (Word doc).  If an unexpected emergency arises for someone caring for children or other dependents, dependent care leave may be available whilst you make longer term care arrangements.

We also have an excellent workplace nursery and provide childcare vouchers.
