Professor Roger Dalrymple

  • I find Brookes to be a highly inclusive and welcoming workplace where it is certainly possible for me to be open about my identity and experiences.

I am Professor of Education in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and have an academic background that crosses two fields: English studies and education studies. I have also held interim Associate Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor positions and I am currently a Staff Governor on the Board of Governors.

I find Brookes to be a highly inclusive and welcoming workplace where it is certainly possible for me to be open about my identity and experiences. Having worked in the past in contexts where this was more difficult, I value this very deeply.

I believe LGBTQ+ role models are vital in all sectors of education and I keenly felt the absence of any such role models during my own formative education, especially in my school years.

The main benefits of being out at work are in terms of wellbeing, dignity and congruence as a person. In the words of a self-help book on coming out that my anxious younger self read some 25 years ago, it’s really about ‘not having to think about it at all.’
