Research degree fees for UK students

  • Research Degree Home Fee Rate -  2021/2022

    The fee information below applies to students who are eligible to pay the 'Home' fee rate, and are studying on any research degree apart from Professional Doctorates which are listed on separate pages (DCM, EdD, DNurs, DMid).

    Please note that fees increase by approximately 4% each year.
    Fees may be paid in instalments during each Academic Year as agreed at enrolment with the Research Degrees Team.

    Continuation and Resubmission fees apply to all students at the same rate:

    Resubmission Fee 

    If following viva, Examiners’ recommend that a student is required to revise and resubmit their thesis for re-examination, the Resubmission fee for the duration of that period.

    Bench Fees

    Bench fees will be calculated on an individual basis and the amount will depend on the subject and project. In some cases no bench fee will be charged.

    Please note all students eligible to pay the Home fee rates must pay these fees as follows:

    • all full-time MPhil/PhD students are required to pay the full-time fee for three complete academic years before they are eligible to pay the continuation fee 
    • all part-time MPhil/PhD students are required to pay the part-time fee for six complete academic years before they are eligible to pay the continuation fee.
    • All full-time Masters by Research Students are required to pay the full-time fee for a minimum of one year or maximum of two years if approved.
    • All part-time Masters by Research Students are required to pay the full-time fee for a minimum of two years or maximum of two years if approved.
    • All students eligible to pay the Home fee rate studying on the PhD by Published Work programme, are required to pay the fee for a minimum of one year or up to submission of thesis for examination if longer.
