Before you arrive

There are plenty of things you can do before you arrive here or start your studies. Find out more about preparing for life at Oxford Brookes including advice about local shopping, travel and finding part-time work.

You can also get started with some of the key tasks for new students, such as:

  • completing your online enrolment
  • viewing your course induction schedule
  • setting up your emails

It's great to do these before Induction Week if possible as it means you will be more prepared and have access to everything you need straight away. You can find details about all these tasks and more on the new student checklist.

Arrivals Weekend (Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January)

This is the weekend when most people move into their halls of residence. The weekend offers a good opportunity to get to know other students, prepare for Induction Week and find out more about what Oxford Brookes University has to offer. The International Student Meeting Point opens on Sunday 18 January, plus there will be a welcome event for all.

The Student Induction Team will be available this weekend both on campus and remotely. Whether you will be moving into halls, commuting, living in Oxford or studying a distance-learning course, we will be pleased to chat with you and answer any questions you may have.

Induction Week (Monday 19 - Friday 23 January)

During this week most students will have a schedule of induction activities to follow, known as your course induction. These activities are designed to introduce you to your academic team and the facilities and learning platforms you'll be using while you study here. Course induction schedules will be available to view from Tuesday 6 January onwards.

Around your course induction events, you can use your free time to attend other events open to all students. There is a calendar of all general events. The International Student Advice Team (ISAT) has also created a guide to Induction Week events for international students.

There are a number of online workshops and sessions available for all students including distance learners.

Fair in the Forum

Visit the fair on Friday afternoon to learn about the wide range of support services and opportunities available to you as a new Oxford Brookes student. Whatever you want to talk about - careers, health, study resources, community and more - there will be someone here to help you.

  • Friday 23 January
  • 11:30am - 3:00pm
  • The Forum, John Henry Brookes Building, Headington Campus

If you will arrive late and miss the Fair, don't worry - you can view the full list of Fair in the Forum attendees here.

The weekend before semester (Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January)

Most students won't have any mandatory activities or classes this weekend, so it's a good chance to relax after Induction Week! If you'd rather keep busy, we recommend using this time to:

  • explore Oxford - take a look at the Daily Info for some good local information
  • buy anything you forgot to bring with you - have you seen our shopping map?
  • get to know your flatmates

Campus remains open at weekends so you are very welcome to come and use the facilities. Why not take a look at the library, sports centre or study spaces? If you need any help, the security team are always available on campus. Students in halls can also contact their wardens - look for information in the communal areas of your flat about how to do this.

Week one of semester (Monday 26 - Friday 30 January)

Monday 26 January marks the official start of semester and is known as 'week one'. Most students will have their first classes this week.

Ideally you should aim to have done the following before this week starts:

  • Completed your online enrolment
  • Logged in to your emails and calendar
  • Viewed your calendar to see your class timetable
  • Checked how to find your classrooms

This will make it really easy for you to start attending your classes. However, if you are arriving late or need help with any of the above, we will still be here to help you during the first few weeks of semester.

There will be lots more events happening during semester time so you have plenty of opportunities to meet others. Many of the University societies will be running free Give it a Go sessions during semester so you can try out the society without buying a membership. You can find the society and welcome events on the Brookes Union events page.

Also, once classes start, it's a good time to start thinking about developing your study skills. Take a look at the Think Space pages to learn more about how they can help you prepare to study at university level.
