Before you arrive

There are plenty of things you can do before you arrive here or start your studies. During the summer, you can:

From early September you can also get started with some of the key tasks for new students, such as:

  • completing your online enrolment
  • viewing your course induction schedule
  • setting up your student emails

It's great to do these before Induction Week if possible as it means you will be more prepared and have access to everything you need straight away. You can find details about all these tasks and more on the new student checklist which will be available from Thursday 6 August.

Welcome Weekend (Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September)

This is the weekend when most people move into their halls of residence. Whether you will be moving into halls, commuting or living in Oxford, there will be welcome events and support services available at the Headington Campus. The weekend offers a good opportunity to get to know other students, prepare for Induction Week and find out more about what Oxford Brookes University has to offer.

There will be a number of events over the weekend including some general welcome events and some introductory sessions for international students.

Fair in the Forum

Visit the fair on Saturday or Sunday to learn about the wide range of opportunities and support available to you as a new student. Whatever you want to talk about - careers, health, study resources, community and more - there will be someone here to help you.

  • Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September
  • 12:00pm - 4:00pm
  • The Forum, John Henry Brookes Building, Headington Campus

If you will miss the Fair, you can view and contact all Fair in the Forum attendees here.

The Brookes Union

When you join Oxford Brookes, you automatically become a member of Brookes Union, the University's students' union. Brookes Union is here to help you get the best out of student life at Brookes and will be hosting a range of welcome events over the first few weeks of semester for you to get involved and meet new people. All students studying at Brookes are welcome at our events.

Find out more about what Brookes Union has to offer, including societies and student networks to join, an exciting events schedule and our advice team. More details will be added throughout the summer so make sure to check back again before you arrive.

Induction Week (Monday 14 - Friday 18 September)

During this week most students will have a schedule of induction activities to follow, known as your course induction. These activities are designed to introduce you to your academic team and the facilities and learning platforms you'll be using while you study here. Course induction schedules will be available to view from Friday 28 August onwards.

You are expected to attend all your course induction sessions so this schedule should be your top priority. However you can use your free time around those sessions to attend other events open to all students. There's also a specific guide to induction events for international students which will be added here later in the summer.

If you are interested in sports, make sure to attend the Sports Fair on Thursday 17 September where you can meet the teams and clubs at Oxford Brookes. You can be a serious student athlete or just enjoy keeping fit in your spare time - everyone is welcome!

The biggest event of the week will be the Freshers' Fair on Friday 18 September 2026 when lots of the Brookes Union Societies come together on the Headington Campus. Don't miss it - you might find a society which interests you!

There are a number of online workshops and sessions available which distance learning students are welcome to attend.

The full events calendar for Induction Week and beyond will be available from Friday 28 August.

The weekend before semester (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September)

Most students won't have any mandatory activities or classes this weekend, so it's a good chance to relax after Induction Week! If you'd rather keep busy, we recommend using this time to:

  • explore Oxford - take a look at the Daily Info for some good local information
  • buy anything you forgot to bring with you - have you seen our shopping map?
  • get to know your flatmates

Campus remains open at weekends so you are very welcome to come and use the facilities. Why not take a look at the library, sports centre or study spaces? If you need help, the Student Induction Team are on campus this weekend too.

Week one of semester (Monday 21 - Friday 25 September)

Monday 21 September marks the official start of semester - this week is known as 'week one'. Most students will have their first classes this week.

Ideally you should aim to have done the following before this week starts:

  • Completed your online enrolment
  • Logged in to your student emails
  • Accessed your class timetable
  • Checked where your classes will be

This will make it really easy for you to start attending your classes. However, if you are arriving late or need help with any of the above, we will still be here to help you during the first few weeks of semester.

Whenever you attend a class, you'll be asked to record your attendance using your Moodle account (or with the lecturer if you cannot access Moodle). This helps show how students are engaging with the course. If a student stops attending, the Engagement Coordinators can reach out and offer them help.

There will be lots more events happening during semester time so you have plenty of opportunities to meet others. Many of the University societies will be running free Give it a Go sessions during semester so you can try out the society without buying a membership. The society and welcome events will be added to the Brookes Union events page later in the summer.

Also, once classes start, it's a good time to start thinking about developing your study skills. Take a look at the Think Space pages to learn more about how they can help you prepare to study at university level.
